CASE STUDY
A Fire Destroys Fiberglass Facility and SOAP Rebuilds Production Line in 8 Weeks
CHALLENGE:
On March 13, 2016 Champion Fiberglass experienced a business owner's nightmare - a fire that destroyed their entire manufacturing facility. The company needed to revive one of their two production lines within 6 weeks in order to maintain their order commitments to waiting customers.
The project would require merging the code from 3 PLCs into 1, mounting sensors, replacing all the old buttons with HMI touchscreens, creating a redundant communication path, and creating an HMI program to help reduce troubleshooting time.
SOLUTION:
An 'All-Hands-On-Deck', get the job done, end-to-end custom design. We deployed an automation team, a panel design team, an HMI programming team, a wiring team, a sensor mounting team, and a testing team to simultaneously implement and coordinate the various parts of the project. Due to the time constraints, we couldn't afford delays, and had to reorganize our standard process into several subset, co-existing projects that would ultimately come together in perfect order to create a full SCADA operation.
In the end, the insurance company said this was the fastest rebuild they had ever seen. We managed to get the production line up and running within 8 weeks; a two-week delay caused by fire damage creating mechanical malfunctions with a gear box that didn't match a motor and lead to hydraulic leaks in the underground plumbing.

CASE STUDY
Flood Prevention Using Automation and Predictive Analytics

CHALLENGE:
The Colorado River Authority was manually monitoring 11 locks and dams along the Tombigbee Waterway in Mississippi. Periodic readings of the water levels were recorded by field technicians who would later report the information via radio to the central control center. These reports were used to control the opening and closing of the 72 gates that would increase/decrease the water flow in accordance with the water levels to mitigate the risk of flooding.

SOLUTION:
We designed and implemented a fully automated process that eliminated the need for manual readings, and enabled the control center to use a predictive modeling tool we built to help them proactively monitor flood risk based on historical weather forecasts and corresponding rainfall.
